This site features projects and circuits for building stereo microphones from low-cost Panasonic and Transsound electret microphone capsules. Included are Mid-Side, XY, and Blumlein microphone setups. In addition, there are interesting related circuits and links to sites with microphone information and parts sources.

MS Mic Version 2
This mic uses two Panasonic WM-55A103 cardioid electret capsules whose outputs are combined to form a figure eight mic for the side output, and a front-firing electret for the mid output. It has a stereo matrixing cicuit with adjustable width and a built-in preamp with adjustable gain providing a line level unbalanced output.

Phantom Powered XY Mic
This mic uses two Panasonic WM-55A103 cardioid electret capsules in XY configuration. A simple four transistor circuit uses phantom power to power the capsules and provide balanced microphone level low impedance outputs.

Transsound Capsule XY Mic
This mic uses two Transsound TSB-165A cardioid electret capsules in an XY configuration. Unlike the Panasonic capsules, these don't have internal FETs. This allows you to use better FETs with a proper gate bias resistor to achieve better noise and distortion performance. The TSB-165A capsules also have larger diaphagms and just plain sound better. This mic is pnatom powered with mic level outputs.
